Williams vs Sakkari (Approx 02:30am AEST)
Serena Williams coming off a 3-hour match, in the week before the US Open, against one of the best movers in the game? I will oppose, thanks.
After 3 hours on court against Arantxa Rus, Williams needs to back up against a fresh Maria Sakkari. After a disappointing performance on the clay in Palermo, Sakkari has put together two very solid performances in New York, defeating Gauff and Putintseva in straight sets.
Whereas some other players, such as Rus, may be a little overwhelmed by the aura surrounding the opponent on the other side of the net, I think Sakkari is well placed to cause the upset here. As mentioned in my outright preview, Serena doesn’t tend to play tennis the week before a grand slam, so I would be shocked that she would want to make a deep run this week. Taking that slight competitive edge off the top of her game could open the door for Sakkari, who served for the first set in their competitive Hopman Cup match at the end of 2018.
Sakkari will extend rallies and keep Williams on the run. If Williams is able to produce a performance full of winners and wipe Sakkari off the court, then fair play to her. Happy to make this a 1 unit play again at the underdog odds given the situation at hand today.
