I didn’t come into Wimbledon thinking I’d find myself keen on backing Stan Wawrinka in any capacity, however he does look to be a very nice price here at the game handicap. Stan on grass – I guess there is a first time for everything.
It was an impressive performance from Wawrinka in round 1 against Broom, particularly in set 2 where he managed to overcome four set points (3 on serve, 1 on return) from *2-5, before running away with things in the third set. He hasn’t played a lot of tennis of late, and the form and fitness has been variable of late, however taking him at the +4 game handicap here against Monfils looks to be more than reasonable. Monfils wasn’t able to cover 3.5 games against Mannarino, who is terribly out of form, and for all that Wawrinka lacks on grass, his backhand slice and IQ may help him gain ascendancy for periods against Monfils over best of 5. Wawrinka would likely cover in any win, a 5 set loss, and may even cover in some 4 set results as well, so I’m happy to take this for 1 unit.
