Not often do I think the bet365 opener is more accurate than Pinnacle’s, however, I don’t agree with Gian Marco Moroni being priced as a big favorite against a talented young player in Edas Butvilas. Bet365 actually opened this match a pick’em at 1.83 (-120) apiece and I thought that was spot-on. Now with Pinny opening Butvilas a 2.48 (+148) underdog, this creates a lot of value on the 19-year-old Lithuanian, at least in my books.
Butvilas was a top ten player in juniors, peaking at #7. His record is much better on hard courts, but he became a lot more consistent over the last year or so. He took a set off Nino Serdarusic at the Szekesfehervar Challenger and just beat former world #153 Jay Clarke in straight sets yesterday. Moroni peaked around the same ranking, but has been struggling with injuries throughout his career, as he still does. The Italian was even flirting with retirement last year. He won his first tournament of the year here in Hammamet, but had to pull out against the aforementioned Clarke the week after. Since then, he lost to players like Stijn Slump or Gianluca Cadenasso, hinting that Moroni is far from his best again. Almost losing a set to Matteo De Vincentis yesterday only substantiates that sentiment. As stated, I have this one at even odds and I’m selling a few cents to play Butvilas on a bookmaker that pays out after retirements.
