Vinny’s ATP Monte Carlo Preview – Karen Khachanov vs Francisco Cerundolo

Posted on

It is still rather chilly and damp in Monte Carlo and I see this as a chance for Karen Khachanov to extend his 3-0 head-to-head lead over Francisco Cerundolo. The Argentinian has raised his level a bit compared to the start of the season, but he’s still not at his very best. His loss to Luciano Darderi in Houston demonstrated that. Despite being regarded as a clay-courter by most, Cerundolo’s rally tolerance actually isn’t that high. He still sends balls flying way too often and against a solid defender in Khachanov, that could come back to haunt him today.

Two weeks ago in Miami, Khachanov – who’s in decent form himself – only defeated Cerundolo in a third-set tiebreak, but still covered the handicap by 4 games. He actually was a 4-game favorite back then (1.30 / -333 on the moneyline) and I don’t see anything that happened since vindicating a 2-game move, even though we’re on clay today. With Cerundolo’s volatile game, there could be another lopsided set in favor of Khachanov, which is why I have this handicap between 3 and 4 games rather than at 2
