Alex’s Indian Wells Preview – Sakkari vs Parry

Posted on

Eight women have a chance to make the quarterfinals in the WTA 1000 tournament in Indian Wells, USA. One of the most important parts of handicapping tennis is being able to compare performance across different surfaces. Another important part is being able to find players on an upward arc of success to back before the betting markets catch up to their performance. We have a chance to do both of these in the match of Maria Sakkari and Diane Parry. The courts at Indian Wells are slow, not as slow as clay, but players with good results on the dirt have done well at this event. Parry is just 22 years old, finished last season ripping through smaller clay tournaments, and has started the season some of her best tennis at the WTA level. Most of the Frenchwomen’s success has come on clay and again, this is NOT a clay tournament, but those performances offer more signal than they would in other hard court tournaments. Parry made the quarterfinals in Auckland, won two matches & took a set off Mirra Andreeva at the Australian Open, and won two matches in Abu Dhabi & took a set off Daria Kasatkina. That’s an impressive run on quicker courts and she’s played well in her first two wins in Indian Wells. Maria Sakkari is the better player, but I think overrated by the market given the current prices. We have the chance to back Diane Parry at 3.00(+200) and I would make Parry 2.55(+155). I’m going to bet on Parry to continue her good start to the season and get her second ever win over a top 10 ranked player in the WTA.
