Vinny’s Australian Open Qualifying Men Preview – Jones vs Ugo Carabelli

Posted on

Similar to the match between Marinkov and Bonadio, a 17-year-old Aussie in Hayden Jones is taking on a player that’s avoiding quick courts at all costs in Camilo Ugo Carabelli. The Argentinian had a super solid year in 2023, however, he was almost entirely playing on clay courts. The only two matches he played on hard courts came in qualifying for Miami and the US Open. Ugo Carabelli lost both of them in straight sets.

Now Jones didn’t leave his mark on the pro tour yet, but his talent was big enough to get rewarded his first wild card back in 2022 when he was only 15 years old. He then lost 3-6, 5-7 to Ernests Gulbis. Last year, Jones took a set off Andrea Pellegrino at the Canberra Challenger and he did the same one week ago against up-and-coming Abedallah Shelbayh. To me, Jones’ chances to win a set are closer to 50% than 40%, and I’m also taking a nibble on the youngster to pull the upset.
