Jake’s Adelaide Preview: Etcheverry vs. Shevchenko

Posted on

It’ll be a battle of two up and coming talents during Adelaide’s first-round showdown on Monday afternoon.

Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry will lock horns with Russia’s Alexander Shevchenko as both players will view this week as a genuine chance to make a push at a maiden tour-level title.

While Etcheverry’s resilience and competitive nature is admirable, I don’t believe he has the same ability and comfort on hard courts, even though he made substantial improvements towards the end of last season.

Shevchenko went on a tear on the Challenger tour 12 months ago, winning Tenerife against Ofner, before losing in the finale at Phoenix against Borges after beating Monfils, Huesler, Reidi, and Halys along the way.

It’s underlying form like this that reaffirms my position on the contest as I have much more faith in Shevchenko’s hard court pedigree than I do the Argentine’s.

If Shevchenko can keep his temper under wraps, I think he’s well equipped to move past a gritty opponent.
