Here’s a player that I am very high on and think is underrated by the market at the moment, coming up against a player that I feel has been a touch overrated in the market with respect to hardcourt form.
I didn’t touch Shevchenko last week in Brisbane as I wanted to see him on court given his wedding and honeymoon took place across the off-season. I still liked what I saw in Brisbane, with a strong win over Van Assche and backing up up with a very competitive performance against Rune, losing 4-6 7-5 6-2. Rune went 5/6 on break point saves, but the interesting part of that stat was the fact those six opportunities came across five different Rune service games, so Shevchenko was able to apply a fair amount of pressure across the course of the match.
I’m just not sold on Etcheverry on hardcourt. He is 11-14 over the last 12 months on the surface, and has only 4 x Top 100 wins in that time to go with 13 losses. I think he has a little more confidence on indoor hardcourt where the conditions are a little more sheltered, but unless he serves a very high first serve percentage and redlines the majority of the match behind his forehand, he is going to have trouble against quality, consistent players on the hardcourt. Shevchenko has the game to exploit the weaknesses of Etcheverry on the hardcourt, and the moneyline price on offer here is incredibly appealing.
