I’m not entirely sure what happened, but it appears as though something clicked for Marco Cecchinato in Estoril, and he has been almost a different player since that tournament.
The level of Cecchinato certainly brings with it some inconsistency at times across the course of the season, however the likelihood of him being switched ‘on’ at grand slam level as a little easier to judge overall. He gets Luca Van Assche here, and although he is going to have the entire crowed against him in this one, the best-of-5 format is likely to play into his hands here in the conditions.
With improved short term form, and the significant experience edge in this one, I have to side with the Italian, especially with the short to medium term form taken into consideration.
