Preview: Given the way Hubert Hurkacz was able to challenge some of the top players across the course of 2021, and with Stefanos Tsitsipas coming off surgery a couple of months ago, I am happy to back in the underdog here to get the jump here in what is a controlled and measured start to the New Year.
These two have played some closely fought contests in recent years, and I’m anticipating Poland to be up 1-0 at the time of this match taking place. Whilst his ATP Finals form was disappointing from Hurkacz, he took significant steps forward in 2021 and is one of the players hot on the heels of the top tier of players on tour. His Melbourne 2021 form was poor but with conditions a little cooler tomorrow in Sydney, he looks to be a solid price here.
With Tsitsipas likely using this tournament as part of his tune-up for the Australian Open and to gauge his form coming off surgery, I’m comfortable jumping in here and backing Hurkacz north of $2.40 here with a likely 1-0 lead for Poland.
