ATP Puerto Vallarta Challenger Preview: Young vs Tabilo

The value is there, even if my past history with Donald Young is a rollercoaster.

It has been a horror couple of years for Donald Young in terms of his tennis career. The 32 year old is in the latter stages of his career, one that started with a lot of promise, but is likely to end with a peak ranking of 38 back in 2012. Motivation has appeared to be lacking in 2021 for the American, with a 10-14 record over the course of the last 12 months. Without the enjoyment and confidence on court, Young can find himself getting down on himself pretty quickly, allowing matches to get away from him. He participated in the World Team Tennis last week, beating Taylor Fritz twice and recent Challenger title winner Christopher Eubanks, whilst putting in competitive efforts against Mackenzie McDonald in losses in the 1-set format. He dominated a one sided affair against Milledge Cossu in round 1 here in Mexico, which means next to nothing except for the fact that Young got to win the last point of the match and walk off with a win and a mild confidence boost.

Today he faces Alejandro Tabilo, who recently claimed the Guayaguil Challenger Title on the clay earlier this month. The conditions in Mexico are slow, but I don’t see them being slow enough to justify Tabilo as sub-$1.15 in the Mexico night session on a hardcourt. Tabilo is 11-11 on hardcourt this year, however his results have been up and down on the surface. As a player that doesn’t always hit through the hardcourts compared to other players of his size, I think he might be a touch vulnerable at the short odds today.

This is about the only price that I would be interested in getting involved in Donald Young matches, and this may be the last. At $6+ odds, I am happy to get involved in this night session match-up.
