Steve’s WTA US Open Preview: Raducanu vs Voegele

Posted on

Qualifier versus lucky loser here, with Emma Raducanu looking to continue a good stretch of form here on her US Open main draw debut.

This match was originally slated to be Raducanu vs Jennifer Brady, before the American withdrew due to injury. Voegele, who lost 2-6 2-6 to Ana Konjuh (who lost in straight sets on Day 1), gets a reprieve as a lucky loser.

Given the recent form of Raducanu, unless nerves are a significant issue, I don’t see her having significant problems in this match-up. Voegele isn’t a decent return of serve, an important trait to consider when looking at larger handicaps. After she scraped by Burrage in round 2, she didn’t back up strongly in the final round, and looks a little devoid of confidence due to her recent form of late.

It was not an easy road through qualifying for Raducanu, but she managed the path in exceptional fashion. In her wins over Schoofs, Bolkvadze and Sherif, Raducanu only dropped 16 games across the three straight set victories. The three wins were off the back of a solid week at the Chicago Challenger last week, where the teenager was able to reach the final, losing to Clara Tauson in 3 sets. She has backed up well, and looks comfortable in the conditions.

Voegele has struggled to hit a high percentage of first serves through her recent matches, and unless she can rectify that significantly, I don’t see these conditions as being suitable for Voegele. Just the 1 unit selection, however this looks to be great value north of $2.

Suggested Bet

1 unit Raducanu -5.5 games vs Voegele at $2.10 at Unibet
