This is the last preview for day one, with an upset on the cards here in my opinion.
Rebeka Masarova was a name that burst onto the scene in 2016, reaching the semi final of the WTA tournament in Gstaad, beating Jelena Jankovic, Anett Kontaveit, and Annika Beck before losing to Viktorija Golubic as a 16 year old. After a limited tennis through 2017-19, and 2020 impacted by Covid, this is the first year where Masarova is able to make steady progress in terms of her rise up the rankings. She has put together an impressive year at ITF level, including winning 19 of her last 20 on hardcourt. After being ranked 733 at the start of the year, she now sits at 231, which is particularly decent given ranking points freeze through most of the year. She defeated Fett, Arruabarrena and Cristian on the way through qualifying and looks to be full of confidence coming into this match-up.
Ana Bogdan was last seen retiring early in set 2 due to heat related issues last week. She hasn’t quite been able to find the level that she has been able to produce in recent years, and against Masarova she is likely to find herself on the run regularly. Given her indifferent form of late, and her struggles in the heat last week, I like Masarova’s chances of an upset here.
