Along the lines of some of the other round 1 plays, I am happy to oppose players who have shown themselves to have question marks around their fitness.
Given Vasek Pospisil hasn’t played a lot of tennis in recent months, and looked to struggle physically in his best of 3 set match against Tommy Paul a couple of weeks ago, I am struggling to find reasons to back in Pospisil today. Low on confidence, it is difficult to see him digging in and playing well enough for long enough to beat Fabio Fognini here today.
Fognini may beat himself though, which keeps the staking low.
The two options to play here are Fognini at the -2.5 game handicap or the -1.5 set handicap. I have decided to take the -1.5 set handicap with this match scheduled a little later in the day. This diminishes the risk of Fognini throwing away a set 2-6 or worse and impacting the game handicap. Getting a racquet on serves is going to be key here from Fognini, as he needs to force Pospisil into playing an extra shot/volley consistently. With Pospisil low on confidence, and lacking the physical touch of a couple of years ago, I am happy to back Fognini at the set handicap for 1 unit.
