Steve’s ATP US Open Preview: Hoang vs Giron

Posted on

Barring an exceptionally high first serve percentage from Antoine Hoang, I am looking to American Marcos Giron to cover the game handicap here against the French qualifier.

I am not sure that tight wins over Go Soeda and beating Mikhail Kukushkin 7-6 7-5 after copping a bagel in set 1 is the best lead-in form here for Hoang. Outdoor hardcourt tennis isn’t a priority for Hoang, with this his first time back on the surface since losing in the second round of Australian Open qualifying in January. Outside of a solid first serve, I don’t see Hoang being a significant and consistent threat in longer rallies, and shouldn’t be a regular threat on the return of serve. This is another match where it looks as though the game handicap is 1 to 1.5 games too low, and worthy of a small play.

I see this match unfolding as a more one-sided version on Giron/Herbert from a week ago. Giron has looked solid of late, prefers the surface, and should benefit from the crowd at his back, and the conditions forecast in Flushing Meadows.

Suggested Bet

1.5 units Giron -5.5 games vs Hoang at $1.83 at Topsport
