I did mention yesterday there was one type of player that was likely to cause Karolina Pliskova trouble, however I do think Jil Teichmann has her own attributes capable of making life very difficult for the Czech today.
Pliskova will be grateful for the rest, with Paula Badosa injuring herself and retiring down 5-7 0-2 yesterday. Pliskova made another slow start to a set, trailing *0-4 40/A before making a comeback. She doesn’t quite look as consistently focussed and locked in as we saw in Montreal last week, however Pegula let her get away with it and Badosa couldn’t capitalise on a strong start.
There is a part of Teichmann’s game that worries me against a number of players on hardcourt, however I think it may actually work in her favour a touch today. The Swiss can at times be guilty of lacking depth in her groundstrokes off both wings, which can cause her to be punished accordingly. I actually think the variation in depth, but also the use of angles more importantly, will work quite effectively against Pliskova, who will find herself on the run more than she is used to.
It is hard to measure up the 2021 form of Teichmann given her injury issues, however it looks as though she has finally been able to turn the corner. with impressive wins over Osaka and Bencic in the last 48 hours. This is a great opportunity for her, so long as she can hit her spots on serve as we have seen this week. I will cap this at 1.5 units as Teichmann’s form levels are harder to judge due to injury and sample size, but there is certainly enough value in this price for a play.
