Whilst it may seem a little silly to jump in front of the Pliskova train at the moment, I’ve been waiting for the right type of opponent to be across the net this week. Paula Badosa at these odds fits the bill perfectly.
Whilst Pliskova did come into this week off a long run last week, culminating in a loss in the final to Camila Giorgi, she was the beneficiary of a first round bye here in Cincinnati. Yulia Putintseva is likely only going to trouble Pliskova in these conditions if Pliskova is ‘off’, however the Czech flicked the switch late in set 1 and it was one way traffic from there. Jessica Pegula led *4-1 in set 1 and 5-0* in set 2, however also struggled to get over the line. From what I’ve seen of Pliskova this week, she is there for the taking, it’s just finding the confident opponent capable of sealing the deal. I’ve looked to be patient in finding spots against her this week, and today looks the best price by far.
I’ve long been of the belief that the toughest form of opposition for Pliskova on a hardcourt is a player with an above average serve, capable of covering the court well. Couple that with some impressive play in tight situations against Martic, Sabalenka and Rybakina, as well as her overall improved play for 2021 and Paula Badosa looks to be tough opposition here today. Whilst she can be a little erratic at times, she has the ability to hit winners in these conditions off both wings, which is another crucial component to beating Pliskova and hampering the Czech’s movement as much as possible.
