Steve’s WTA Tokyo Games Preview: Podoroska vs Badosa

Posted on

Nadia Podoroska was the beneficiary of the wayward version of Ekaterina Alexandrova in round 2. There is next to no chance she is as lucky today with Paula Badosa on the other side of the net.

This is going to be a tricky spot for Podoroska. Whilst the majority of her best tennis has come on clay, she can find herself in matches on hards in the right conditions, or against big strikers of the ball who have an off day. Against a player who has the mix of power and movement of Badosa, coming off a performance such as beating Iga Swiatek in straight sets, looks to be a tough ask for Podoroska.

This match is largely on the racquet of Badosa, and I have a lot more trust in her ability to limit errors compared to what we saw from Alexandrova yesterday. On hardcourt form, and overall form in 2021, I am happy to back in Badosa at the -4.5 games here for 1.5 units.
