Steve’s ATP French Open Preview: Delbonis vs Davidovich Fokina

Posted on

I think Delbonis will be able to finish off what Van de Zandschulp and Ruud started today when he faces Alejandro Davidovich Fokina for a place in the Roland Garros quarter finals.

I won’t go into too much detail on this one, however ADF has dropped his serve 14 times across the course of his last 10 sets. I would have preferred he face Delbonis here in conditions that were a little heavier, however that has not eventuated. Delbonis has looked incredibly solid across his three wins, however he impressed me greatly against Fognini. In times gone by, Delbonis would have tried to force the issue too much against players like Fognini. This time however, Delbonis showed restraint, hitting only 14 winners and 24 unforced errors compared to the 19 winners and 53 unforced errors from the racquet of Fognini. He wasn’t afraid to rally and pick his spots to attack appropriately. He also managed to get off the court in 2 hours, giving him the energy edge against a player off back to back 5 setters.

Experience is key here, and I think Delbonis has the edge here. I will back him for 1.5 units.
