Steve’s WTA French Open Preview: Cirstea vs Zidansek

Posted on

I think the odds should be around the other way in this match-up between Tamara Zidansek and Sorana Cirstea.

I haven’t been as high on Cirstea as some in the lead-up, which is a funny thing to say given she has won a tournament and made the final of another on clay for 2021. I think when you look at the quality of the fields of both tournaments, and the players Cirstea has beaten along the way (and they form they were in at the time), it doesn’t stack up against almost all other claycourt WTA level tournaments for the year. She got the job done in straight sets against Kasatkina as an underdog by absolutely crushing the second serve of Kasatkina, winning 17/19 points involving the Russian’s second serve. She also heavily turned her ankle in the match, but was still able to remain aggressive enough to beat the Russian. There may be some carry over effects today though.

Tamara Zidansek recovered from a 0-6 first set, and saved multiple break points in tight moments in set 2, before defeating Katerina Siniakova (who also appeared to be hampered physcially late) in three sets. She should find the slightly better conditions forecast today to her advantage (better conditions than Cirstea saw for most of her two successful tournaments), and is arguably the most difficult opponent outside of Krejcikova that Cirstea has faced recently.

I have Zidansek at $1.80 in this one, so the underdog spot here appeals. Add the injury concerns for Cirstea, and I am happy to make this a 2 unit selection.
