I won’t go into too much detail here as time is of the essence.
This match and selection is a near carbon copy of the Bautista Agut vs Martinez match I got involved in during round 1. This selection comes from the same reasons as that first preview, with RBA coming up against another inconsistent player who has indifferent clay form in Henri Laaksonen.
I was impressed at the consistency in the game of RBA in round 1, and he did a fantastic job of limiting his errors in key moments, and breaking down the game, and then the mental game, of Martinez in round 1. I am expecting a similar lapse today from Laaksonen, who beat Hanfmann in round 1. Hanfmann looked a little below 100% but credit to Laaksonen for responding and taking the 4th set and match.
Laaksonen came within a point of losing in the final round of qualifying, and like a few others today he is going to face a significantly more difficult opponent today in RBA. Look for the Spaniard to consistently pressure Laaksonen, and cover the -8.5 game handicap on offer.
