Steve’s WTA French Open Preview: Collins vs Kalinina

Posted on

Whilst there is limited form to go off in terms of recent clay matches for Danielle Collins, I do have her as value here in a similar way to her being value against Clara Tauson here last year.

Collins is the type of player who can be absolutely relentless on court, both in terms of her game but also her general demeanor and body language on court. In what is one of, if not the biggest match of her career, Anhelina Kalinina is going to be in for a rude shock today.

Collins looked solid in round 1 against Wang. Although she won in three sets, her serve stats were incredibly solid and were it not for a 3/12 BP conversion (Wang held 5 different service games having faced break points, this had the potential to be far more one sided. Nevertheless, Collins still got the win and we now get what looks to be a value price today.

The Kalinina form coming in is very solid at ITF level, however over the longer term, and considering the stage in which this match is played today, I cannot go past a play on Collins as an underdog here. Look for her to be aggressive and attempt to assert her authority on this match, both physically and verbally, from the outset.
