Steve’s ATP French Open Preview: Gaston vs Gasquet

Posted on

I will keep this short and sweet – there isn’t any part of the tennis I have witnessed from Richard Gasquet in the last couple of weeks that leads me to believe that he is suited by this match being over the best-of-5 sets at this stage of his career.

Unfortunately, the value in the price of Gaston has largely gone (well done to those who nabbed the opening prices), however there is still enough in this price for a 1 unit selection. Gaston has looked solid at Challenger level, and will get a boost from returning to the scene of his biggest career wins last year. He made the 4th round, with wins over the likes of Nishioka and Wawrinka before falling to Dom Thiem in 5 sets. I think he matches up reasonably well here against Gasquet as a leftie, and given the struggles Gasquet has faced against the likes of Martinez, Munar and Thompson in recent tournaments, I really like Hugo’s chances of backing up last year with another quality French Open scalp.

If this were played over best of 3 sets, it would be right on the cusp of making a play. Instead, over the longer format, I am happy to jump in on the moneyline for 1 unit.
