WTA Australian Open Preview: Babos vs Potapova

Posted on

A 1 unit selection to kick off the day, as I like the Russian here at the game handicap to get the jump on Timea Babos.

Anastasia Potapova was dominant in round 1, taking care of Alison Riske 6-3 6-1 in just 53 minutes, whilst only putting 52% of her first serves into play. She has looked at home over the course of her three matches in the conditions over the last week, and looks to finally be back to full fitness after surgery last year. When you look at her form this past week, and her comfort in the conditions, it is hard to oppose her today against Babos.

The Hungarian also made her way through the first round with a straight sets win, defeating Bonaventure 7-6 6-4. She did save a set point late in set one, before going on to take the tiebreak 7-0.

In terms of the ceilings of both players on the singles tour, Potapova’s is far higher. Whilst Babos has been able to string together some wins to start the year, the quality of opponent today in Potapova is a significant step up, and I am not sure over the larger sample size of the last 18 months. This match lies on the racquet of the Russian, who should be too good in these conditions.
