I remarked last week that there is more to life than backing Jordan Thompson minus game handicaps.
Fortunately for me he is an underdog today.
Whilst it may surprise some, Casper Ruud is a player who generates about as much topspin off both wings as any player on tour. That is great on clay and slower hardcourts, however in these warmer, faster conditions it is going to be a little tougher for the Norwegian, especially against a player like Thompson.
Thompson found the sweet spot last week, playing enough tennis to get a feel for the courts and the conditions, but not enough to wreck his chances for the grand slam. Whilst this won’t be a large play, I cannot let Thompson go around here as a slight underdog. Based on form this side of the COVID tour suspension, I have Thompson as a warm favourite here, and am happy to back him for 1.5 units.
