WTA US Open – Vekic vs Pironkova

Vekic vs Pironkova (Approx 05:00am AEST)

After a stern test in round 1 against Kristyna Pliskova, it was fantastic to see Donna Vekic get things back on track in round 2.

Whilst many are a little put off by players struggling in early rounds when they should win comfortable, I think there is significant upside in these players at times should they progress further through the first week of the grand slam. We saw Vekic had well and truly clicked into gear in round 2, where she dropped only 3 games to Patricia Maria Tig in a 75 minutes. It was a great, locked in performance from start to finish, and something she will need to replicate today to give herself the best chance of progressing to the 4th round.

The return of Tsvetana Pironkova this week after over 3 years away from the game has been nothing short of impressive. With such little data it has been hard to find an angle into her first two rounds, however she has delivered two impressive wins over Liudmila Samsonova and Garbine Muguruza to reach the third round. Whilst her odds in both matches looked a little high, has there perhaps been a slight overreaction today based off wins against an inexperienced grand slam competitor and a top level player returning from injury with next to no match practice?

I have gravitated towards Vekic at the game line in this one, and the -3.5 game handicap looks attackable. Whilst not a large play as Pironkova has too little data to work with in her comeback, I like Vekic to progress to the 4th round with a relatively comfortable victory. I am happy to play this one for 1.5 units.

Suggested Bet

1.5 units Vekic -3.5 games at $1.90 at Topsport/Bet365
