WTA US Open – McNally vs Alexandrova

McNally vs Alexandrova (Approx 06:30am AEST)

If you read my preview for McNally vs Kuzmova, you may have a fair idea where this preview may be heading, considering the odds on offer for the young American today.

As I mentioned in round 1, I have a very strong preference to support McNally against larger strikers of the ball. She did an absolutely fantastic job of handling the pace of Kuzmova, limiting her unforced error count to 8 in her 6-4 6-1 victory. McNally had one lapse, serving at *4-3 in the first set and dropping serve. To the teenager’s credit though, she responded with the instant break back, and never looked troubled for the rest of the match.

One of the big takeaways from round 1 was the significant difference between the World Team Tennis and the US Open. Kim Clijsters started like a house on fire against Ekaterina Alexandrova, before fading as the match progressed into the second and third sets. I think it was more the significant drop-off in the level of Clijsters more than a significant uptick in form from Alexandrova, who produced 29 winners and 32 unforced errors on her way to a 3-6 7-5 6-1 victory. The positive for Alexandrova? She saved 12 of 15 break points she faced. She faced those break points across seven different service games, so she consistently found herself under pressure.

A consistent player capable of serving at a high level and hitting her spots has a good chance against a player such as Alexandrova. We saw it last week against Christina McHale in similar conditions. Look for the American to continue her good run here. I think she is capable of one of the upsets of Day 4.

Suggested Bet

2 units McNally to defeat Alexandrova at $3.55 at Topsport
