Vinny’s Australian Open Qualifying Women Preview – Jang vs Sun

Posted on

I don’t put too much stock – if any – in Su Jeong Jang’s first-round win over Noma Noha Akugue. The latter is going through a tough period right now, having lost her ninth match in a row. The young German, despite all her power, can’t find the court at all currently. The opposite can be said about Lulu Sun. The former college player is on the brink of breaking out on tour and her game especially suits quicker courts. She hits the ball hard and can dictate points at will. From what I’ve seen of her this year, the New Zealand-born Swiss also added some margin and therefore consistency, and that also showed in her results.

Sun is 4-1 so far with straight-set wins over Aiava, Hruncakova, Kessler and Watson, all of whom I rate higher than Jang. The current Elo ratings approve. Jang is 90 points behind Sun and even 105 on hard courts, a pretty big discrepancy which is not really reflected in the betting odds. My fair price on Sun is 1.59, so there’s quite a bit of value at the current line of over 1.70.
