The relentless flow of money for Spain’s Pedro Martinez – at the ATP 250 level – does have me somewhat concerned about some concealed information, but I have to trust my guns and make a play on the German at a silly price.
Although Altmaier hasn’t had favourable results recently, he gets back to his best surface this week and should be the fresher of the two players as Martinez is coming off a Challenger tournament win on home soil last week.
Traditionally, players coming off triumphs like this are more vulnerable in their first-up contest at a new venue, so I’m happy with that side of things heading into this match.
This one won’t be pretty, and it will grit and determination that gets the win for either player.
With a contest that looks so even on paper, it’s hard to say to the $2.30, no matter how much I respect the market.
