Dominik Koepfer has been playing some fine tennis this year, including winning the Canberra Challenger. Conditions in Indian Wells will be a lot different though. You can really treat this as a clay-court tournament as it’s playing even slower than some events on the red dirt. Now if you’re just looking at stats, Koepfer was 24-5 on clay last year. However, 11 of these wins came at extreme altitude in Mexico City and San Luis Potosi, so in reverse, I wouldn’t treat these as clay events either.
Both Alexander Shevchenko and Dominik Koepfer are just around the top 50 in the rankings, but the slower the courts are, the more I favor the Kazakh. Koepfer always tries to end points quickly, which simply isn’t possible at Indian Wells. I don’t think Shevchenko should be an underdog to the German on mud-slow hard courts and I even have him a slight favorite here, so there’s plenty of room to bet what in my opinion is a wrong man favored.
