Jordan Thompson is one of the fittest players on tour, and I have no concerns about him backing up here against Casper Ruud in the Los Cabos final.
It feels as though Thompson has been playing with house money since he was 0-6 *1-4 15/40 down in his quarter final clash, however it’s hard to fault his level and effort through his match with Zverev yesterday as well. Thompson has the ability to come into the net and be aggressive as needed, and there is every chance he will need to call on that tactic here against Ruud. It wouldn’t be a massive surprise if he did, as Thompson’s friend Max Purcell had some good success with the tactic when he forced Ruud to a 5th set tiebreak at the Aus Open.
Ruud’s level this week has been exceptional, and to be completely honest he is a player that I’m starting to think about from a Roland Garros futures standpoint given the injury issues for Nadal and Alcaraz. I think his price here is a little short against a player with better court coverage and all round ability, and Ruud was certainly the beneficiary of a poor returning effort from Tsitsipas in key moments. At the very least I know Thompson will be giving maximum effort here to the end.
