Alvaro Guillen Meza, Renzo Olivo, Thiago Monteiro, Hernan Casanova, Marco Cecchinato, Diego Schwartzman… None of the players Roman Andres Burruchaga has played this early clay season can compare to Yannick Hanfmann stylistically. The big-hitting German reached the quarterfinal at the Masters 1000 event in Rome last year, beating Nicolas Jarry, Taylor Fritz and Andrey Rublev among others. It’s kind of surprising that Hanfmann doesn’t do better on other surfaces, but on clay, he gets more time to set up his big groundstrokes. His biggest weapon will be his serve though, and the kick especially. At altitude, that becomes even more lethal.
I still don’t know what to make of Burruchaga’s form. The Argentinian had to retire from the Challenger event in Punta del Este with pain in his wrist. Since that retirement came right before his semifinal match, I can’t imagine that injury just went away the very next day. Beating Diego Schwartzman is like taking candy from a baby nowadays and the veteran helped that by spraying an uncharacteristic amount of unforced errors. Against Hanfmann, Burruchaga will have to improve a lot, and the only way for the Argentinian to win this match is to turn it into a battle. Hanfmann should be able to pressurize Burruchaga’s service games more often and I have this spread at 3 to 3.5 rather than 2.5.
