The style of Sara Errani was enough to frustrate Caty McNally into submission in the previous round. With a more experienced player across the net today however, I don’t see the Italian having the same level of success.
Maria overcame some tight moments late in the first set against Bai, before a more comfortable second set, winning 7-5 6-3 in 84 minutes. She appears to have found some solid rhythm on her serve, and the form around Paolini and Volynets, the two players who have recently beaten her, isn’t too bad either. Ultimately, a player with the experience level of Maria should be able to handle the quirkier style of Errani, who lacks power behind her serve and relies on a decent break percentage. I was anticipating a 4.5 game handicap in this clash give the short to medium term form of both, with Errani only notching wins recently over more erratic opposition.
