With a home crowd behind him, and a traveling Monteiro on the other side of the night, I think Sweden’s Karl Friberg is well over the odds in Friday night’s Davis Cup qualifiers.
The Brazilian was in Uruguay playing on clay courts a week ago, and while I’d wager he’s been in Sweden long enough to acclimatize, it’s not the best schedule for the Brazilian.
Monteiro almost never plays indoor hard court tennis, and when he does, he doesn’t fare that well.
He hasn’t played under a roof since Paris 2022, and only has 14 documented matches on indoor hard courts, winning 6 matches and returning an ML ROI of -18.6%.
I won’t pretend Friberg lights things up on his end, as he’s only ever played main draw tennis via wildcard (6-4, 6-2 loss to Kecmanovic last year), but one thing I’ve learned with the Davis Cup is that underdog should always be taken seriously.
It’s always appropriate as well to question the motivation of players in situations like this and while I’d never say Monteiro isn’t patriotic, he’s got the golden swing right around the corner and stands to gain very little from a Davis Cup win.
I saw enough from Friberg in his cameo against Kecmanovic to suggest he can trouble Monteiro, and I think we’re getting a good price to see what he can do.
