Vinny’s Australian Open Men’s Preview – Humbert vs Zhang

Posted on

We shouldn’t see too many long rallies in this matchup between two powerful, serve-oriented players. While Ugo Humbert has always received love from bookmakers and the market, he often finds himself in close battles, especially with other big servers. The same can be said about Zhang Zhizhen. Prior to his straight-sets win over Federico Coria, four of his five major hard-court matches went five sets, the other one being a four-setter.

Last year, the Chinese lost to eventual quarterfinalist Ben Shelton in a fifth-set match tiebreak at Melbourne Park and beat Casper Ruud at the US Open. He also exchanged third-set tiebreak wins with Hubert Hurkacz during the Asian swing, just to name a few examples of him playing up to his competition. Zhang isn’t the most mentally stable player on tour, but neither is Humbert. Frankly, I don’t think there’s too much between the two and in a matchup between two aggressive players and poor returners, I’m looking for at least four long sets.
