The Belgian is 16-2 in Hobart across the course of her career, only dropping 2 sets in those 16 wins. She has used this tournament as the springboard into the Australian Open and has been able to play some of her best tennis in the country. She has rolled through Collins and Schmiedlova in rapid fashion, and gets Ruse here having defeated Fruhvirtova and Gracheva.
The leftie Rus can be a tricky player for some to face as a left hander, however Merten’s backhand side should be able to nullify any potential issues here. Mertens looks to be a class above on form and with renewed confidence after an indifferent 2023 by her standards, the game handicap here appeals.
