It was a great 2023 season from Peyton Stearns, before the young American seemed to run out of gas a touch in the back end of the season. Coming off a break, and a three set loss to Camila Giorgi, this looks to be a nice position to buy back in on the American.
It takes a big jump in level to be able to start the year outside the world’s Top 200, and finish within the Top 100, let alone the Top 50 like Stearns achieved. Her level did drop over the last couple of months as the fatigue of a long year started to catch up with her, though for the most part she was still quite competitive even in her losses (many going to three sets).
She faces Gracheva here, who snuck over the line against Martincova, then defeated Sun in straight sets, before losing to Gauff 1-6 1-6 in 53 minutes. I opposed her last week, however I still don’t think the odds that are available for her are an accurate reflection of her form on the outdoor hardcourt. Perhaps I don’t rate the Austin/Indian Wells/Miami run last year to the same degree as others, however it is interesting to note that during that run Gracheva defeated Stearns at very similar odds to today. Since then Stearns has continued to develop her game at the top level and Gracheva has stagnated a touch, so the price point today for Stearns looks solid in my opinion. Happy to make a small play.
