After knocking off Carlos Alcaraz and Casper Ruud in 2023, Fabian Marozsan will attempt to take another prolific scalp at Auckland as Gael Monfils is set to make his season debut at Auckland after stunning close to 2023.
The Frenchman isn’t getting any younger, but has shown time and time again that if his body can hold up physically, he’s always a threat to take out whatever tournament he’s playing in.
But that’s always the asterisk I’ve got my eye on, because if Monfils isn’t fit and firing, he’s often vulnerable and under the odds – that’s what I’m seeing here today.
I can’t promise you he’ll be out out-of-form, but I think this is the best spot to ask the question: first up in a unique part of the world in warmer conditions.
The Hungarian Marozsan dealt with an undisclosed illness leading up to the campaign, leaving him just two weeks to train for his opener against a Agut, a contest that went expectedly poorly.
However, given the extended preparation time and overall upwards trajectory for the youngster, I’m more than happy to have a piece of a price that I think’s gone too far in Monfils direction.
