Vinny’s ATP Noumea Challenger Preview – Cazaux vs Mayot

Posted on

Hard to believe that it’s already been four years since Harold Mayot beat Arthur Cazaux 6-4, 6-1 in the boys’ singles final to win the Australian Open. Since then, their positions have slightly shifted and it’s Cazaux who’s had more success so far on the pro tour. The conqueror of Nonthaburi made it to the final four times and won two Challenger titles in Thailand. He also made two more Challenger finals last year, a feat that Mayot has only done once. While Mayot is still waiting for his career to break through, it’s only a matter of time when that is going to happen.

Not only have Cazaux and Mayot met at the 2020 junior Australian Open, the two are good friends as well. It always has a special note if players that have known each other since junior days meet again on tour. With Mayot being quite a big underdog, I feel like the uncertainty on how they handle that could bring them closer together. The upside is there for Mayot, who has beaten Ugo Blanchet, Constant Lestienne and Jesper de Jong on his way to the Noumea semifinal. Cazaux’ route has been comparable as he defeated Jules Marie, Patrick Kypson and Benoit Paire. I really don’t think there’s too much between the two 21-year-old Frenchmen, which is why I’m betting Mayot to win and the match to go to a third set.
