Now I am as impressed as the next person by the tennis that Struff has been able to produce here in Monte Carlo, and even backed Struff in this match-up at Roland Garros a couple of years ago, when he went on to win in 5 sets. With that being said, has there been a bit of an overreaction here?
Struff has put together two very impressive wins in the last two matches, defeating Alex De Minaur and Casper Ruud in straight sets. He had the opportunity to regularly dictate and control proceedings, and was strong enough behind his serve and forehand to be able to take out the win on both occasions. Today presents as a very different match-up. After a slow start against Munar, heavily impacted by a horrific early first serve percentage, Rublev looked rock solid through sets 2 and 3, and was always in control against a very tricky opponent in Khachanov yesterday. His body of form over the last 12 months favours the Russian over Struff, and the power upgrade at the other end of the court for the German today will make life incredibly difficult.
More than comfortable taking the near even money for Rublev -3.5 games for 2 units in this one.
