1 unit McDonald -3.5 games vs Gojowczyk at $1.83 at Topsport

Preview: Mackenzie McDonald is returning to the scene where his return to the Top 100 took a MASSIVE step last year, as he takes on Peter Gojowczyk in round 1 in Melbourne.

I do make value here in taking McDonald here at the -3.5 game handicap. McDonald was very solid across the course of 2021, starting the year ranked 194, making the 4th round of the Australian Open, grinding out Challenger wins, then re-establishing himself at ATP level to sit just outside the Top 50. His game matches up relatively well against most styles, and his outdoor hardcourt form looks significantly stronger than Gojowczyk.

Peter Gojowczyk can be a tough player to gauge, as there is such a wide range between his best tennis and his worst. It is part of the reason Gojowczyk needed to enter qualifying for the 2021 US Open, and also was the reason he looked solid that week, losing to Alcaraz in 5 sets in the 4th round. That level isn’t a level he has sustained though, so it’s a little difficult to confidently jump into the +3.5 games here.

If Gojowczyk is able to find a level close to his best and sustain it, he is a chance here. Personally, I am happy to take the most consistent player in McDonald here at the game handicap for 1 unit.
