Steve’s WTA US Open Qualifying Preview: Perez vs Tsurenko

Posted on

Short and sharp here, with Ellen Perez presenting as a value price in this match-up in the first round of qualifying.

I won’t be going overboard in the first round of qualifying, as I want to have a look at how the courts and conditions play for what will be a busy 2 and a half weeks. What I do know though is there is no aspect of Lesia Tsurenko’s 2021 form that justifies her price here. I think she is being priced a little too much on past form across her career. When you consider the last time we saw her on court she retired hurt, has an extensive injury history, and the weather in Flushing Meadows is on the warm side, I am happy to oppose.

Ellen Perez has built her game impressively in both doubles and singles in 2021. With more time and focus on singles, I think we will be seeing the improvements come as a result of this in the months ahead. The leftie serve will also work well against Tsurenko in my opinion, and is an extra part of the appeal in the price today.

As I mentioned, I don’t want to go overboard here on day one of qualifying, however at $2.90+ I am happy to make a 1.5 unit selection here.

1.5 units Perez to defeat Tsurenko at $2.97 at Topsport
