Tamara Korpatsch made the decision to skip Wimbledon qualifying, instead trying to earn ranking points from playing Bad Homburg instead. Was it the right decision?
Korpatsch is playing the longer game, as she slowly but surely creeps her way closer to the Top 100. When you cast an eye over her last 18-24 months, it becomes clear that her best surface is the clay, and that makes a lot of sense when you look at her game style and ability to cover the court. Extending points will be important today against a player with the style of Mandy Minella.
Minella was solid without being spectacular in qualifying against Lys and Kucova, however I don’t think she is deserving of her current odds based on the form she has produced since returning to the tour after having a baby last year. Her serve stats were well below par, something that is concerning in my opinion given the improved return of serve across the net compared to what Minella will see today.
I was a little surprised to see $1.80 sitting next to Korpatsch’s name, and I need to make at least a small play there. Whilst the two games in qualifying may help her adjust to the conditions a little quicker than Korpatsch, I still think there is value in a 1 unit selection here.
