Here is another example of a qualifier that I perceive to be value on Day 1 of Wimbledon (or Day 2 if it keeps on raining).
Claire Liu caught my eye at Wimbledon in 2018 when she pushed eventual title winner Angelique Kerber in the first round in a very tight 3-set match. The 21 year old is just outside the Top 100 at the moment, and needed to make her way through qualifying to take part in the 2021 edition of the main draw. She qualified with wins over Loeb, Shinikova and Sharma, with the second and third sets against the Australian the best of the lot. She had success as a junior at Wimbledon, and the limited grass form across her career suggests she is capable on the surface.
Grass has never been a happy hunting ground for Misaki Doi, save for a 4th round run in 2016, and I don’t see anything changing at this stage of her career. She has not looked comfortable on the surface in two very one-sided losses to Kerber and Sorribes Tormo in the lead-up (only win came against Dalinina), and part of the concern here is the regular pressure she is going to endure on her serve.
Liu put together some solid numbers on serve through qualifying, and I am looking for her to continue her good form with a strong round 1 victory today. I will take Liu to win and cover the game handicap for 1.5 units.
