Steve’s WTA Strasbourg Preview: Diyas vs Garcia

Posted on

Short, sharp and to the point: I really like the conditions, match-ups and overall situation in Strasbourg for Caroline Garcia.

I have a preference for taking Garcia in positions where she is playing opponents who are bigger strikers of the ball, but perhaps don’t have the best overall court coverage. This is the case today with Zarina Diyas on the other side of the net, and with a career 12-4 record and a previous title in Strasbourg, Garcia has past form in the conditions in the slam lead-up.

Garcia has taken steps in the right direction in recent weeks, with wins over Cocciarretto, Ormaechea and Friedsam, and losses to Kudermetova and Siniakova, both who has shown solid recent form on the clay. The dropping of her father as coach isn’t a negative, and she could have been even closer in those recent losses were it not for below average break point conversion.

She looks well placed here against Diyas, who hasn’t shown a great deal on the clay this season. I opposed her with Trevisan a couple of weeks ago and she managed her best performance of the clay season off the back of a first serve percentage of 90%. Her second serve is a liability on clay, and unless she produces another absurdly high first serve percentage, I have Garcia covering here.

I will #FlyWithCaro for 1 unit.
