Roland Garros is back. Louisa Chirico is back. If you only started following tennis the last two years, you won’t have come across her name, but the 25-year-old American has been as high as #58 in the rankings back in 2016. She’s been battling with a severe shoulder injury the last two years and is finally able to compete again.
Chirico, unlike most of her compatriots, likes clay courts. Throughout her career, she won 64% of her matches, making it her best surface. Today, she’s facing Jaqueline Adina Cristian, whom I’m a big fan of as well. The Romanian has a huge game which already shone through on WTA level when she had runs on indoor hards in Lyon and St. Petersburg, only losing close matches to Kenin and Kuznetsova. On clay however, her game is still too inconsistent and the movement needs to improve.
As the odds suggest, this bet needs a lot of things to go right. On every other surface, I would have just accepted the pricing and wanted nothing to do with it, but knowing that Chirico always put in the work, I’m holding my nose and give this one a shot against a player that can’t really be trusted on clay. Roland Garros is Chirico’s self-proclaimed favorite tournament and I’m here for a feelgood story.
