Steve’s WTA Madrid Preview: Kontaveit vs Stojanovic

Posted on

I will keep this one short. I think books are currently overrating Anett Kontaveit a touch, and underrating Nina Stojanovic a touch, so this becomes a bit of a perfect storm.

There is a catch though – I still have some question marks surrounding Stojanovic tightening up in key moments in matches at the top level. She was exceptional in her qualifying wins however, knocking off Paolini and Konjuh as an underdog on her way to the main draw. She has the game to be a threat on the surface, however is still lacking the consistency to consider her at the moneyline in this instance.

I have been drawn towards the game total of 19.5 since this match opened. As I mentioned I rate Stojanovic, and she can hold her own on serve for patches throughout this match, however I don’t see her pulling off a one-sided victory sending this total under. A 7-5/7-6 set, Stojanovic taking a set, or 6-4 6-4 all send this total over, and off the qualifying form I am happy to play this for 1 unit.
