Vinny’s WTA Bogotá Preview – Osorio Serrano vs Tan

Posted on

The wonderful run of the up-and-coming Colombian Maria Camila Osorio Serrano continues and she’s into the semifinal of a WTA event for the first time in her young career. But will it be the last stop on her Bogota run? I don’t hope so!

Her dominant win over Martincova was followed by another start-to-finish victory against Stefanie Voegele. The Swiss had her chances, but Osorio Serrano brought her best tennis when it really mattered and ended up winning 20 points more than her opponent, 6-3 7-5.

Today, Harmony Tan awaits the young Colombian and even though her scorelines look impressive – she beat Buzarnescu 6-3 6-3, Seguel 6-4 7-6 and Arruabarrena 6-1 6-4 – her opponents made it rather easy for the French. Buzarnescu served 0 aces and 12 double faults, the match against Seguel was shaped by pushy rallies and unforced errors while Arruabarrena put up, believe it or not, 1 winner and 19 unforced errors in set one.

To be honest I kinda liked Tan’s rise on (indoor) hard courts in recent years, but on clay in these conditions, it will be tough to overcome the home player who knows exactly how to deal with these courts and the altitude. This match might become a battle and Tan having to go through qualifying could have an impact here too.

That being said, I trust the Colombian on home soil again as I don’t think she’ll become too tense even in the biggest match of her career. Tan has never been to this stage either and as written in my last preview, Osorio Serrano aims high and has that killer instinct, which she also showed when winning the juniors’ US Open in 2019. Let’s hope this run isn’t over yet. ¡Vamos!
