I’ve been staring at this price for longer than I’ll care to admit, however the answer is yes, I will be betting on Sam Stosur in 2021.
I don’t see any value in the game handicap in this one, it’s the $4.50+ for the win or nothing at all. The reduced crowds at Melbourne Park favours Stosur more than anyone, as she hasn’t handled the occasion well over the years playing as mostly a favourite in front of packed home crowds. She won round 1 as an underdog against Aiava, playing as though she had nothing to lose. In the slower night conditions she looks a great proposition here at a big price.
This has the potential to be a major letdown spot for Pegula coming off her win against Azarenka. She has looked solid, however I think her preference may have been to play in the heat of the day here, alas it has not eventuate.
Given the style of Pegula, I think the heavy topspin game of Stosur may work okay here. This has the makings of a game that will be one of two extremes, and in this instance I’d rather be on Stosur with nothing to lose.
