ATP Roland Garros Qualifying Preview: Karatsev vs Purcell

Karatsev vs Purcell (Approx 10:30pm AEST)

This play is a continuation on from the selection on Max Purcell in round 1 of qualifying, as the Australian looked to be incredibly impressive yesterday against Manuel Guinard. Whilst Aslan Karatsev has put together some impressive Challenger level tennis over the last couple of weeks, can we trust him at such a short price?

Purcell was incredibly solid in his win in round 1, and it arguably should have been more one-sided were it not for poor break point conversions, including a couple of 0/40 positions that were unable to be converted. He showed his ability to defend and cover the court on both his first and second serve return, winning 30+ percent on each. His second serve is a slight liability on the clay, however at $5+ there is going to be a liability of some description, which explains the price.

Karatsev got the job done 6-1 7-5 in his first round match against Arthur Cazaux, backing up some solid Challenger form over the last couple of weeks. Today represents an interesting type of opponent for him in Purcell, who is more rounded in terms of his overall game. He can cover the court incredibly well for his size, and also possesses a big first serve, so I don’t see the Russian getting everything to go his way today.

In a slightly different style of match-up to many of Karatsev’s recent opponents, I am happy to take him on at the short price. If Purcell can serve well, he is right in this match. I am happy to play his price here for 1 unit.

Suggested Bet

1 unit Purcell to defeat Karatsev at $5.20 at Topsport
